RED SPADE FARM
Four-season market garden
We cultivate a one-acre plot of land in Chemainus, BC. Our goal is contribute to the local food scene by producing a wide array of vegetables which are affordable, sustainably grown, and superior in quality to store-bought produce.
We are fortunate that our land, which was previously used as a horse farm, has excellent drainage and good fertility. After addressing the compaction caused by the horses, we have adopted minimal tillage practices to promote the health of our soil. We use compost to feed our soil, which in turn feeds our plants. For pest control we use insect netting and rely otherwise on the thriving bird population that inhabits our neighbourhood. We use no pesticides - not even organic certified products - as we feel that even products derived from natural sources may have impacts on human and ecological health.
Red Spade Farm is run by the family of Matt, Christy, and - as of late 2017 - Rupert. While still a liability on the production side, Rupert has shown an affinity for sales.
